What is a chronograph watch?
It is merely a wristwatch that has the same function as a stopwatch. In 1821, a Frenchman named Rieussec invented the chronograph or the stopwatch. Then in 1910, eighty-nine years later, the chronograph watch was introduced and it became very popular straight away. In 1990, the Swiss watch making company Swatch reinvented the chronograph watch and increased its waning popularity because it designed the watches as less bulky and more stylish and modern in design.
How does it work?
Aside from the usual main dial on regular watches that does the general timekeeping, a chronograph watch also has subsidiary dials which are used for very specific time measurements. The number of dials on any given watch varies, depending on the design and can be as much as four dials, each one designed for a slightly different function.
It is a very common design for one of the dials to be situated on the number nine area of the main dial, which projects continuous seconds. There is a button on the side that you depress and the watch then functions as a stopwatch. One of the miniature dials, usually the one on the number 9 of the main dial, starts moving continuously to count the seconds.

As it functions as a stopwatch, it is used for many timekeeping purposes, not necessarily in the sports areas.

Military and sportsmen usually opt the Swiss watch makers to provide for their chronograph watches. The Swiss watches have always been known for their accuracy in timekeeping and durability, and this is most important in chronograph watches. Although quartz versions of the watches have now replaced a lot of the mechanical watches for their accuracy in measuring up to a hundredths of a second, the standard chronograph watch by Swiss watchmakers is still being used today.
Moreover, some Swiss companies have combined the two worlds and produced a watch with both mechanical and quartz technologies: the watch looks like a mechanical watch, but has the efficiency of an electronic watch.
What is the chronograph watch today?
More than anything, it is the type of watch bought as a fashion item than for its function. It has a masculine look to it that projects a sporty image to the wearer. As a lot of athletes wear this kind of watch, the general public follow the taste of these celebrities and buy the watch as well.
Although it is quite expensive because of the detailed craftsmanship and intricate mechanism involved, it is a watch that lasts for a long period of time and is of great value for its money. If you are interested in buying one, always opt to get the Swiss ones or at least be guided by the Swiss standard of watch making.
