Ever since time was invented, men have become watchers of time. Throughout the years, men have developed time pieces that they can use to keep track of time as it passes. Men’s watches are usually worn on the wrist, so they are most commonly called as wrist watches. Before they became popular in the 1920’s, pocket watches are what men used to keep track of time. Pocket watches have covers and carried on the pockets with a chain attached to it.
Inexpensive and medium-priced watches that are used for timekeeping are watches that are electronic and with quartz movements. Expensive and collectible watches are valued highly because of their workmanship, craftsmanship, and appeal.
Men’s watches have either mechanical or electronic movement. Mechanical watches are less accurate; they often have errors with seconds per day. They are more costly to produce and require strict and regular adjustment and maintenance. Electronic watches have fewer or even no parts that are moving because they use tiny quartz crystal to provide a time base that is stable.
Men’s watches have displays that can either be analogue or digital. Analogue watches have a numbered dial from 1 to 12. Mounted in the middle are rotating hands, a rotating hour hand and a rotating minute hand that is longer. Many watches also have a third hand that shows the current second of the current minute. Digital watches, on the other hand, is simpler and shows the time as a number, e.g., 3:07 instead of the hands pointing to the different numbers on an analogue watch.
Straps are integral part of the watch because it is what holds the whole piece on the wrist. They come in many forms and colours. Materials commonly used are leather, metal, and rubber. Crocodile skin is very expensive when used as a leather strap for watches. Metal straps use gold, white gold, silver, and even stainless steel metal. Rubber straps provide that sporty look when you are wearing them.
Watches function as a piece that provides time in hour, minutes, and seconds. Some watches also incorporate numbers that correspond to the current date, month and year. Alarms are also another feature that some watches nowadays possess. Some digital watches also feature a stopwatch which is also very useful.
Men’s watches not only serve one purpose of telling time, it is also appreciated as jewelry and wearable art in itself. It is wise to invest on a timepiece that is classic in design for this does not go out of style and can be passed on to other generations.
